Discover more about Sanctuary of Montevergine

The Sanctuary of Montevergine, located in Mercogliano, stands as one of Campania's most important religious sites. Founded by Saint William of Vercelli in 1119, the sanctuary sits atop Montevergine at an altitude of 1,263 meters, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valley and, on clear days, the Gulf of Naples. The site was originally home to temples dedicated to Cybele and Vesta before becoming a Christian sanctuary, with the mountain eventually named after the Virgin Mary. The sanctuary comprises both the Old Basilica, which houses the miraculous effigy of the Virgin Mary, and the New Basilica Cathedral, built in a modern Romanesque style and completed in 1961. The icon of the Black Madonna, or 'Mamma Schiavona,' is a focal point of devotion, drawing approximately 1.5 million pilgrims annually. The Abbey Museum displays countless testimonies of faith and the history of the annual 'Juta,' the climb to the Sanctuary during the Candelora festival on February 2nd. The crypt houses the remains of Saint William of Vercelli. Visitors can explore the sanctuary's rich artistic and architectural heritage, including the three cloisters, library, and the remains of the old Gothic-style basilica. The site also holds historical significance as the secret location where the Shroud of Turin was hidden during World War II to protect it from the Nazis. Reaching the sanctuary is an experience in itself, with options including a scenic drive, hiking trails, and a funicular railway from Mercogliano, one of Europe's steepest.
