Piazza Cahen: Orvieto's Panoramic Gateway

Piazza Cahen is a significant public space in Orvieto, serving as a gateway to the city's historical and natural attractions. Situated near the funicular station, it's often the first place visitors encounter upon arriving from Orvieto Scalo. The piazza itself may not be the most beautiful square, but it provides a panoramic view of the countryside east of Orvieto. Historically, the square is named after Edoardo Cahen, a Jewish banker who supported the unification of Italy. Today, Piazza Cahen provides access to several key landmarks. To the right of the funicular entrance lies the Fortezza Albornoz, now a public park offering stunning views. To the left, you'll find the path leading to St. Patrick's Well (Pozzo di San Patrizio) and the remains of the Etruscan Temple of Belvedere. Also located in Piazza Cahen is the Ara dei Cinquecento, a monument dedicated to the residents of Orvieto who died in various wars. The monument depicts Victory crowning dying soldiers and includes a detailed list of fallen soldiers. For those arriving by car, Piazza Cahen offers a paid parking lot, though free parking is available near the train station.
