Piazza della Repubblica: Orvieto's Historical Heart

Piazza della Repubblica, one of Orvieto's most famous squares, has been the civic heart of the city since its construction. Situated at the western end of Corso Cavour, its history stretches back to the Etruscan era when it served as the core of the ancient city. Before the Duomo's construction, Piazza della Repubblica was also the center of religious life, with Sant'Andrea Church as the city's main church. In Roman times, the square was likely the site of the Roman Forum, and even earlier, an Etruscan temple occupied the space where the church stands today. By the 12th century, all of the city's important buildings stood on or near the square. The square is home to several beautiful buildings, including the Palazzo Comunale, which has undergone numerous restorations over the centuries. Sant'Andrea Church, officially named Chiesa dei Santi Andrea e Bartolomeo, is another prominent landmark. Across the square are the Palazzo Ottaviani and Palazzo Ravizza. Today, Piazza della Repubblica is a vibrant social gathering place for locals and tourists alike. Visitors can explore local boutiques and artisanal stores, relax, and observe the lively atmosphere while enjoying gelato or espresso. The square also hosts a bustling farmer's market with local produce and goods. As night falls, the illuminated round tower casts a magical glow, inviting evening strolls.
