The Palazzo del Popolo, which dominates the square, was built to house the Capitano del Popolo, a political figure representing the people in the medieval government. This leader worked alongside consuls and podestà, but was elected from outside Orvieto to prevent corruption. The palace's architecture, made of basalt stone and tuff, reflects Orvieto's civil architecture of the late 13th century.
