Quattro Canti: The Heart of Palermo

Quattro Canti, also known as Piazza Vigliena, stands as a magnificent example of Baroque architecture and urban planning in the heart of Palermo. This octagonal square marks the intersection of Via Maqueda and Corso Vittorio Emanuele, effectively dividing Palermo into its four historic quarters: Kalsa, Seralcadi, Albergaria, and Castellammare.Constructed between 1608 and 1620, the square's design is attributed to Giulio Lasso and Mariano Smiriglio. The four concave facades are nearly identical and feature a stunning display of superimposed architectural orders. The first level showcases fountains representing the four seasons, with sculptures of Roman gods. The second level features statues of Spanish Kings who ruled Sicily in the 17th century. The third level is adorned with statues of Palermo's four patron saints: Christina, Ninfa, Olivia, and Agata.Quattro Canti is often called the "Theater of the Sun" because at least one of the facades is always illuminated by sunlight. The square has been a focal point of Palermo's public life for centuries, hosting political rallies, religious processions, and cultural festivals. Today, it remains a vibrant hub, attracting tourists and locals alike.
