Discover more about Santa Maria dello Spasimo

Santa Maria dello Spasimo, or simply Lo Spasimo, is an unfinished Catholic church located in the historic Kalsa neighborhood of Palermo. Its story began in 1509 when construction commenced on the church and an accompanying monastery for the Olivetan Order, authorized by Pope Julius II. The land was donated by Giacomo Basilicò, a lawyer inspired by the Church of Our Lady of Spasimo in the Holy Land. The church's design reflected the late Gothic style prevalent in Palermo at the time, influenced by Spanish architectural trends. Originally planned to be completed within six years, construction faced numerous setbacks. A major disruption occurred in 1535 when the threat of a Turkish invasion diverted resources towards fortifying the city. Materials intended for the church's completion were repurposed for defense, leaving it without a roof. Despite its unfinished state, Lo Spasimo has a rich history of adaptive reuse. In 1569, the monks sold the church, and it was later used as a theater, a lazaretto (quarantine station) during a 17th-century plague, and even a hospital in the 19th century. After years of neglect, restoration efforts in 1995 transformed the space into an open-air cultural venue. Notably, the church commissioned Raphael's painting "Christ Falling on the Way to Calvary," also known as "Lo Spasimo di Sicilia". The painting faced its own perils, surviving a shipwreck en route to Palermo, only to be later sold to Philip IV of Spain in 1622 and now resides in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Today, Santa Maria dello Spasimo hosts musical, theatrical, and cultural events, its roofless nave creating a unique and evocative atmosphere.
