Teatro Massimo: A Sicilian Opera House
Experience the grandeur of Italy's largest opera house, a symbol of Palermo's rich cultural heritage and architectural brilliance.
The Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele, commonly known as Teatro Massimo, is a grand opera house located in Piazza Giuseppe Verdi in Palermo, Sicily. It is the largest opera house in Italy, and the third largest in Europe, after the Opéra National de Paris and the Vienna State Opera. Its construction began in 1875 and was completed in 1897, designed by architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile and later his son Ernesto Basile. The theater is renowned for its neoclassical architectural design and near-perfect acoustics. The exterior showcases a Greek-Sicilian design, while the interior features an Art Nouveau style. The horseshoe-shaped auditorium can host up to 1,300 people across the stalls, five floors of boxes, and a gallery. The theater's ceiling has flower decorations and a unique symbolic wheel that can be opened for ventilation, an original cooling system. Throughout its history, Teatro Massimo has hosted world-class opera productions, attracting renowned composers, singers, and conductors. After being closed for renovations for 23 years, it reopened in 1997 with a concert by the Berliner Philharmoniker. Today, visitors can explore the theater through guided tours, which include the main auditorium, the Royal Box, the Pompeian Room, and the Hall of Emblems.
