    Car

    To reach Morant Point Lighthouse by car, start from the A4 highway. If coming from Kingston, head east on the A4 towards Morant Bay. Continue on the A4 until you reach the town of Morant Bay. From Morant Bay, follow signs to Morant Point Lighthouse. The road may become rough and unpaved towards the end, so proceed with caution. A 4WD is recommended during the rainy season. Limited parking is available near the lighthouse.

    Public Transportation

    From Yallahs Valley, take a taxi or bus towards Morant Bay. Ask the driver to drop you off at the Morant Point turn-off on the A4 highway. From the turn-off, it's approximately 2 miles to the lighthouse. You can walk or hire a local taxi for the remaining distance. Negotiate the fare with the driver beforehand. Taxi fare from the turn-off to the lighthouse is approximately JMD 200-300. Ensure you have small bills.

    If you arrive at the turn-off on the A4 highway via public transport, you can walk the remaining 2 miles to Morant Point Lighthouse. The walk offers scenic views. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and be mindful of traffic. Walking during daylight hours is advisable.

    The Morant Point Lighthouse, located on the easternmost tip of Jamaica in St. Thomas parish, is more than just a navigational aid; it's a testament to the island's rich maritime history and engineering ingenuity. Erected in 1841, it holds the distinction of being the oldest lighthouse in Jamaica and the first cast iron lighthouse in the Western Hemisphere.Designed by Alexander Gordon, the lighthouse's 100-foot iron tube was cast in London before being shipped to Jamaica. It was assembled by George Grove and Kru men from Africa, who were brought to Jamaica after emancipation to work on infrastructure projects. The structure has a diameter of 5 feet at the base, tapering to 3 feet at the top, and is painted with distinctive red and white horizontal bands. A semicircular masonry wall protects the base from hurricane surf.Visiting the lighthouse is an adventure. The journey often involves traversing rough, unpaved roads, with the landscape transforming into fields of sugarcane. Upon arrival, visitors are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, the coastline, and the distant John Crow Mountains.
