Discover more about Seville Great House

Seville Great House, located within the Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann, Jamaica, is a window into the island's multifaceted history. The 300-acre park encompasses the remains of the Taino village of Maima, the first Spanish settlement known as Sevilla la Nueva, a British sugar plantation, and more. Originally established by Spanish settlers in 1509 as Sevilla la Nueva, it served as the first European settlement and capital on the island. In 1655, the English captured Jamaica, and the land was granted to Captain Samuel Hemmings, who constructed the Seville Great House in the 1670s. The Great House that stands today was built in 1745 by Hemmings' grandson. The two-story structure was damaged by a hurricane in 1898, resulting in the removal of the top story. Today, the Seville Great House functions as a museum, exhibiting artifacts that depict the lives of the Taino people, Africans, and Europeans who once inhabited the area. Visitors can explore the grounds, where they'll find the relics of a water wheel, the overseer's house, and a barbecue pit. The park also features reconstructions of Taino and African houses. Guided tours provide detailed explanations of the historical significance of the sites. Visitors can also explore nature trails, enjoy picnics, and participate in workshops.
