Originally named Charles Square, it was renamed in 1976 to honor Samuel Sharpe, a Jamaican national hero and leader of the 1831 Christmas Rebellion, also known as the Baptist War. Sharpe, a Baptist deacon, played a pivotal role in the fight against slavery, advocating for non-violent protest. His efforts and the rebellion he inspired were instrumental in the abolition of slavery in the British colonies.
