Originally named Charles Square, it was renamed in 1976 to honor Samuel Sharpe, a Jamaican national hero and leader of the 1831 Christmas Rebellion, also known as the Baptist War. Sharpe, a Baptist deacon, played a pivotal role in the fight against slavery, advocating for non-violent protest. His efforts and the rebellion he inspired were instrumental in the abolition of slavery in the British colonies. He was executed in Montego Bay on May 23, 1832, for his role in the uprising.The square is surrounded by historic buildings that offer a glimpse into Jamaica's colonial past. These include the Montego Bay Civic Centre, a reconstruction of the original courthouse where Sharpe was tried, and the Cage, a former jail for runaway slaves, vagrants, and unruly seamen.
