Sam Sharpe Square: A Monument to Jamaican Freedom

Sam Sharpe Square, located in the heart of Montego Bay, is a significant historical and cultural landmark. Originally named Charles Square, it was renamed in 1976 to honor Samuel Sharpe, a Jamaican national hero and leader of the 1831 Christmas Rebellion, also known as the Baptist War. Sharpe, a Baptist deacon, played a pivotal role in the fight against slavery, advocating for non-violent protest. His efforts and the rebellion he inspired were instrumental in the abolition of slavery in the British colonies. He was executed in Montego Bay on May 23, 1832, for his role in the uprising.The square is surrounded by historic buildings that offer a glimpse into Jamaica's colonial past. These include the Montego Bay Civic Centre, a reconstruction of the original courthouse where Sharpe was tried, and the Cage, a former jail for runaway slaves, vagrants, and unruly seamen. The square also features the Sam Sharpe Monument, a bronze sculpture depicting Sharpe addressing his people, and the Freedom Monument, erected in 2007 to memorialize those who fought for emancipation. A fountain donated by Captain J. Kerr, a banana baron, adds to the square's charm.Today, Sam Sharpe Square is a bustling center of activity, where locals and tourists gather.
