Maizuru Park: Fukuoka's Historical Green Heart

Maizuru Park, a sprawling green space in Fukuoka's Chuo Ward, offers a tranquil escape with a rich historical backdrop. The park is built around the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, once the largest castle in Kyushu. Constructed in the early 17th century by Kuroda Nagamasa, the castle was largely torn down after the Meiji Restoration, but its remaining walls, gates, and turrets provide a glimpse into feudal Japan. The park is renowned for its seasonal beauty, especially during the spring cherry blossom season when over 1,000 trees burst into bloom. This attracts large crowds for hanami (flower viewing) parties. Besides cherry blossoms, the park features plum blossoms in February, wisteria in late April, and other flowers throughout the year. The moats surrounding the castle ruins add to the scenic landscape, with water lilies and lotuses blooming in some. Maizuru Park also holds historical significance as the site of the Korokan, an ancient guesthouse for foreign diplomats. Discovered in 1987, the Korokan ruins highlight Fukuoka's importance as a port of entry to Japan during the Heian period. In addition to its historical and natural attractions, Maizuru Park offers sports facilities such as an athletic field and tennis courts. It is adjacent to Ohori Park and the Fukuoka City Art Museum, creating a hub of culture and recreation in the city center. The park is open 24 hours, providing a space for relaxation and recreation year-round.
