Discover more about Memorial Tower Dedicated to Mobilized Students

Located in a serene park near the Atomic Bomb Dome, the Memorial Tower Dedicated to Mobilized Students is a solemn tribute to the students who died during World War II. These students, over 10,000 in number, were mobilized to work in factories and demolition sites due to labor shortages caused by the war. Tragically, approximately 6,300 of 8,400 mobilized students in Hiroshima were killed by the atomic bombing on August 6, 1945. The 12-meter-tall tower, built in May 1967, features five tiers adorned with Arita-yaki ceramic tiles. A statue of the Goddess of Peace stands beneath the tower, surrounded by eight doves, symbolizing a desire for peace. Four relief panels depict the students engaged in wartime labor. The tower was erected through the efforts and donations of bereaved families, who sought to ensure that the sacrifices of these young individuals would never be forgotten. Each year on August 6th, a memorial service is held in front of the tower, offering a moment of reflection, remembrance, and a renewed commitment to peace. The site provides a tranquil space for visitors to contemplate the profound impact of war and honor the memory of those who were lost.
