Ayatori Bridge: A Whimsical Crossing

Ayatori Bridge, also known as Cat's Cradle Bridge, is a striking footbridge that curves gracefully over the Kakusenkei Gorge in Yamanaka Onsen. The bridge's name comes from the Japanese game 'Ayatori,' resembling the string figures created during the game. Designed by Hiroshi Teshigahara, the bridge spans 94.7 meters and is celebrated for its faded red painted beams and winding pattern.The bridge provides breathtaking views of the Daishoji River and the lush greenery of the Kakusenkei Gorge. The unique architecture creates an interesting ambiance, making it a favorite destination for tourists. From April to November, visitors can enjoy refreshments at the Kakusenkei Kawadoko café located near the bridge, with viewing decks over the stream. The bridge is illuminated in various colors each evening from April until the end of the snow season, offering a different perspective of the gorge.Kakusenkei Gorge, through which the Ayatori Bridge passes, stretches 1.3 kilometers from Korogi Bridge to Kurotani Bridge. A waterside trail along the gorge offers a tranquil escape, with views of waterfalls and deep pools. The path also leads to the Basho-do Hut, commemorating the visit of the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho, who was inspired by the area's beauty.
