Discover more about Amanohashidate

Amanohashidate, translating to "bridge to heaven," is a captivating natural wonder located in Miyazu Bay, Kyoto Prefecture. This 3.6-kilometer-long sandbar, formed over millennia by the accumulation of sediment from the Sea of Japan and the Noda River, is one of Japan's Three Most Beautiful Views. Covered with approximately 8,000 pine trees, the sandbar creates a picturesque landscape of white sand and green pines against the backdrop of the blue sea. Steeped in history and mythology, Amanohashidate has been revered as a sacred site for centuries. According to legend, the deity Izanagi used Amanohashidate as a ladder to visit his lover, Izanami. One day, the ladder fell to earth, creating the landform we see today. This myth has led to Amanohashidate being known as a place that brings men and women together and fulfills good fortune. Visitors can walk or cycle along the sandbar, enjoying the natural beauty and visiting attractions such as Amanohashidate Shrine and Isoshimizu Well. For a unique perspective, ascend to either Kasamatsu Park or Amanohashidate View Land and perform "matanozoki" – viewing the scenery upside down through your legs – which makes the sandbar appear like a dragon ascending to the heavens. Sightseeing boats also offer cruises around the bay, providing another vantage point. Amanohashidate is not only a scenic marvel but also a place of cultural significance, with several temples and shrines in the surrounding area, including Chion-ji Temple, Kono-jinja Shrine, and Nariai-ji Temple.
