Discover more about Dotonbori River

Dotonbori, more accurately a canal than a river, pulsates with the electric energy of Osaka. Established in 1612 by Yasui Doton, who sought to expand Osaka's waterways, it quickly evolved into the city's premier entertainment district. Though Yasui Doton died before his project was complete, his cousins finished the canal and named it in his honor. From the Edo period into the early Showa period, Dotonbori flourished with theaters, playhouses, restaurants, and tea houses. While bombings during World War II destroyed much of the area, Dotonbori was rebuilt and continues to thrive as a dining and entertainment district. Today, Dotonbori is famous for its bright neon lights and massive billboards, especially at night. The Glico Running Man sign is a must-see landmark, along with the Kani Doraku crab. Visitors can stroll along the canal, take a river cruise, and explore the many shops and restaurants. Dotonbori offers Kansai-style street food, bars, and all-you-can-eat okonomiyaki restaurants. Whether you're exploring back alleys or taking a foodie tour, Dotonbori has something for everyone.
