Hine Jinja: A Shrine Rooted in History and Legend

Hine Jinja, nestled in Izumisano, Osaka, is more than just a Shinto shrine; it's a journey through time and tradition. Believed to have been founded to enshrine the ancestors of Hinenomiyakko, who resided in the area in ancient times, its exact construction year remains unknown. The shrine is one of the Izumigosha and forms the heart of Hinenosho, a site recognized as part of Japan's Heritage. Once called “Oiseki Jinja Shrine” due to its management of the Yukawa Irrigation Canal, Hine Jinja played a vital role in the region's agricultural development. The Ikawa Irrigation System, which flows through the shrine grounds, was recognized as a World Irrigation Heritage Site. The shrine's history is rich with festivals and cultural events, including sarugaku performances and renga sessions. Although destroyed by fire in 1585, it was rebuilt in 1602, showcasing architectural styles unique to the southern part of Osaka Prefecture. The shrine is associated with Emperor Jimmu, Japan's first emperor, enshrining his father, Ugaya Fukiaezu no Mikoto, and mother, Tamayori-hime no Mikoto. Hine Jinja is also famous for its Makura Festival (Pillow Festival), a tradition with over 1,300 years of history, where prayers are offered for fertility, safe childbirth, and peaceful sleep. Visitors can write wishes on pillow-shaped wooden plaques and dedicate them to the shrine. The shrine's name, Hine, is derived from its location believed to be the boundary between the land of the Sun Goddess and the afterlife, adding to its spiritual significance.
