    Discover more about Hōkyō-in

Hōkyō-in, nestled in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto, is a historically significant yet lesser-known Buddhist temple. Founded in 1605 by the warrior monk Tōyō Eichō, it belongs to the Tenryū-ji school of the Rinzai Zen sect. Originally named Zenri-ji, Emperor Shirakawa ordered its construction during the Heian period (794-1185). The temple's name was later changed to Hōkyō-in, deriving from the posthumous Buddhist name of Yoshiakira Ashikaga, a shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. The temple is celebrated for its exquisite strolling garden, which features white sand, verdant moss, maple trees, and seasonal flowers. The garden is particularly captivating in autumn when the maple leaves transform into brilliant shades of red and orange. The temple building allows visitors to enter and appreciate the garden's beauty from a peaceful vantage point. Note that tripods and large cameras are not allowed in the temple. Hōkyō-in offers a tranquil escape from the bustling tourist spots of Arashiyama. Its serene atmosphere and picturesque garden make it a worthwhile destination for those seeking a deeper connection with Kyoto's cultural heritage.
