    Discover more about Konchi-in

Konchi-in Temple, nestled in Kyoto's Sakyo Ward as a sub-temple of the larger Nanzen-ji complex, provides a serene and culturally rich experience. Founded in the 15th century by Ashikaga Yoshimochi and Daigo Tokuki, it was initially located in northern Kyoto. The temple was later relocated to its current site in 1605 by Ishin Suden, an advisor to Tokugawa Ieyasu, who played a significant role in the Edo shogunate. Konchi-in is renowned for its exquisite Crane and Turtle Garden (Tsurukame-no-niwa), a Special Place of Scenic Beauty designed by Kobori Enshu in 1632. This dry landscape garden features meticulously arranged rocks and raked gravel, representing a crane and a turtle, symbolizing longevity and stability. The garden incorporates the surrounding Higashiyama mountains as borrowed scenery (shakkei), creating an illusion of greater space and harmony. Within the temple grounds, visitors can explore the Hojo, an Important Cultural Property known for its Kano school fusuma paintings, and the Toshogu Shrine, which enshrines relics of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The tea ceremony room, designed by Kobori Enshu, is another highlight, featuring eight window seats and offering a tranquil space for contemplation. Konchi-in provides a comprehensive experience of Japanese arts and history in a peaceful setting, away from the crowds of more famous sites.
