Public Transport
Kyoto is well-served by buses and subways, making it easy to reach most attractions. From Kyoto Station, take the Karasuma Subway Line north to reach the city center, or use a local bus to access destinations like Kinkaku-ji or Kiyomizu-dera. A single subway fare costs between ¥220-350, while a flat-rate bus fare within the central area is ¥230. Consider purchasing a one-day pass for unlimited travel.
Taxi
Taxis are readily available throughout Kyoto and can be a convenient option, especially for groups. You can hail a taxi on the street or find one at a taxi rank outside major stations and tourist attractions. The base fare is around ¥600 for the first 1.5km, with additional charges per kilometer. A short taxi ride from Kyoto Station to the Gion district will likely cost around ¥1,000-¥1,500. Be aware that fares increase by 20% between 10 PM and 5 AM.
Walking
Many of Kyoto's most charming districts, such as Gion and Higashiyama, are best explored on foot. From Kiyomizu-dera Temple, you can stroll through the historic streets of Higashiyama, lined with traditional shops and teahouses. Be prepared for some hills in certain areas. Walking is free, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of these historic neighborhoods.
