Murin-an Garden: A Meiji-Era Oasis

Nestled in Kyoto's Okazaki district, Murin-an Garden offers a tranquil escape from the city's bustle. Built as a private villa for statesman Yamagata Aritomo, the garden showcases a unique blend of Japanese and Western design principles from the Meiji period. Yamagata, recognizing Japan's need to modernize, incorporated Western elements into the garden, including a Western-style house and a spacious lawn. The garden's design, by renowned garden architect Ogawa Jihei, features a strolling-style layout with a meandering stream, waterfall, and meticulously manicured trees and moss. Water is sourced from the Lake Biwa Canal, which was completed around the same time as the garden's construction. The Higashiyama mountains serve as borrowed scenery, enhancing the garden's sense of depth and tranquility. Murin-an comprises three main structures: the main house, a Western-style house, and a teahouse. The Western-style house contains a museum with information about Yamagata Aritomo and Ogawa Jihei. The second floor features a room where key political discussions were held before the Russo-Japanese War in 1903. Visitors can also enjoy matcha tea and Japanese sweets in the main Japanese house, overlooking the gardens. Murin-an was donated to Kyoto City in 1941 and has been preserved as a public space.
