Discover more about Sagano romantic train

The Sagano Romantic Train, or Sagano Scenic Railway, is a vintage diesel locomotive that offers a nostalgic and visually stunning journey through the Arashiyama district of Kyoto. Established in 1990, the railway utilizes tracks dating back to 1929, which originally served as a vital link for locals. The transition from freight transport to sightseeing adventure in the early 90s transformed it into the enchanting experience it is today. The train cars are designed to reflect the grandeur of yesteryears, featuring wooden interiors, art deco elements, and vast windows that frame the panoramic views. Car No. 5, known as "The Rich," is an open-air car that allows passengers to fully immerse themselves in the sounds of the valley and gentle breeze. The 7.3-kilometer route winds slowly through the mountains, taking about 25 minutes to complete, allowing passengers to fully absorb the ever-changing beauty of the Hozugawa River and its surrounding gorge. Each season offers a distinct tapestry of beauty, from the delicate cherry blossoms of spring to the deep greens of summer, the fiery autumn foliage, and the tranquil snow-dusted landscapes of winter. The train operates from March 1st to December 29th, with hourly departures from 9:00 to 16:00 (and occasionally until 17:00 on busy days). At Saga Torokko Station, visitors can also explore a museum with historical locomotives and a large-scale railway diorama.
