    Discover more about Taima-dera

Taima-dera Temple, located in Katsuragi, Nara Prefecture, is a treasure trove of history and spirituality. Founded in the 7th century, the temple is associated with Prince Maroko, half-brother of Prince Shotoku, and later moved to its current location by Taima no Kunimi. The temple's history is interwoven with the introduction of Buddhism in Japan, mountain asceticism, and the tale of Princess Chujo. The temple grounds house numerous national treasures, including the Mandala Hall, which enshrines the Taima Mandala, a large tapestry woven in the 8th century. This mandala, depicting the Pure Land of Amida Buddha, is linked to Princess Chujo, a semi-legendary figure known as the "Cinderella of Japan". Legend says she wove the mandala in a single night using lotus threads, with divine assistance. The temple also boasts the Kondo Hall, home to Japan's oldest clay Buddha statue, and the Kodo Hall, featuring beautiful Buddhist statues from the 9th to 12th centuries. Taima-dera is unique for its two original pagodas, dating back to around 710 AD, which have miraculously remained intact. The temple's gardens, designed to represent the Pure Land, offer a tranquil space for reflection. Visitors can also participate in cultural activities such as copying figures from the Taima Mandala. The temple's location, slightly removed from major tourist hubs, provides a peaceful atmosphere for exploring its art, architecture, and gardens.
