Discover more about Sōseigawa park

Sōseigawa Park, stretching 820 meters through central Sapporo, offers a refreshing blend of nature and art in an urban setting. The park follows the course of the Sōsei River, which historically served as a canal and a dividing line in the city. Today, it's a place for relaxation and recreation, loved by locals and visitors alike. The park's history is closely tied to the development of Sapporo. The Sōsei River, originally called the Otomo-bori, was excavated in 1869 by Otomo Kametaro. The park marks the location of downtown Sapporo during the Hokkaido reclamation period, with a monument called '0 point' commemorating this heritage. Today, a statue of Otomo Kametaro stands at Sosei Bridge, a reminder of the river's importance. Redesigned and completed in 2011, the park features amenities such as grassy areas, sculptures, and an underpass. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the narrow river, admiring the various trees and flowers that bloom throughout the seasons. In May, the park is adorned with around 200 lilac trees of 30 varieties, while July brings the vibrant colors of over 20 types of daylilies. The park also features 18 sculptures by three artists, adding an artistic touch to the natural surroundings. The 'Snow Ring,' a white circular bridge by Kozo Nishino, spans the Sōsei River at Mannaka Square, marking the origin point of Sapporo's north, south, east, and west axes. Sōseigawa Park hosts various festivals and events throughout the year, especially during spring and summer.
