Ise Jingu Geku-sando: A Path to Spiritual Serenity
Experience tranquility on the path to Ise Jingu Geku, with local crafts, cuisine, and spiritual ambiance along the serene Geku-sando.
Ise Jingu Geku-sando, the path to Ise Jingu's Outer Shrine (Geku), offers a peaceful and spiritually enriching experience. As the main approach to Geku, it provides a transition from the everyday world to the sacred grounds of one of Japan's most revered Shinto shrines. The path stretches approximately 400 meters from Iseshi Station to the Geku, making it an easily accessible walk for pilgrims and tourists alike. A large wooden torii gate marks the entrance to the Geku approach from the station. Along the way, you'll find a variety of ryokan (traditional Japanese inns), restaurants, and souvenir shops. At night, the path is beautifully lit by traditional Ise Washi lanterns. Ise Jingu, also known simply as Jingu, is a shrine complex composed of many Shinto shrines centered on two main shrines, Naikū (Inner Shrine) and Gekū (Outer Shrine). Geku is dedicated to Toyouke Omikami, the deity of agriculture, food, and industry. It is customary to visit Geku before visiting Naiku. The shrine was founded approximately 1500 years ago. Visitors can explore the Kubikiya-den, Kujoden and Gomaya, where sacred horses are kept. The Geku-sando is more than just a street; it's an integral part of the Ise Jingu experience, offering a blend of spiritual preparation and cultural immersion.
