Discover more about Orihime Shrine

Orihime Shrine, also known as Ashikaga Orihime Shrine, stands as a vibrant testament to Ashikaga's rich textile heritage and enduring traditions. Founded in 1705, the shrine honors Amenomihoko-no-Mikoto and Yachichihime-no-Mikoto, weaving deities who have watched over the city's textile industry for centuries. Originally located within Yakumo Shrine, Orihime Shrine was relocated to its current mountainside location in 1879. After a fire destroyed the relocated structure, it was rebuilt in 1937 in a style inspired by the Phoenix Hall of Byodo-in Temple in Uji, Kyoto. The striking vermilion buildings create a beautiful contrast against the surrounding lush greenery. Visitors can ascend the 229 stone steps of Otokozaka to reach the shrine, or take the gentler Onnazaka path, marked by seven-colored torii gates. These gates represent seven virtues: connection, health, wisdom, studies, work, academic success, and leadership. At night, the torii gates and paths are illuminated. Beyond its historical and cultural significance, Orihime Shrine is also a popular spot for couples seeking blessings for their relationships. The shrine features a Lover's Sanctuary and a Bell of Love, adding to its romantic atmosphere. From the shrine's courtyard, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Kanto Plain, the Watarase River, and the city of Ashikaga.
