Discover more about Ono Terusaki shrine

Ono Terusaki Shrine, affectionately called "Onoteru-sama" by locals, provides a tranquil retreat in the heart of Tokyo. Founded in 852 to honor Ono-no-Takamura, a distinguished scholar, poet, and government official of the Heian period, the shrine has been relocated a few times, finding its current location in 1866. Ono-no-Takamura is known for his wit and ability to communicate with the other world. The shrine is also dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, further solidifying its reputation as a place for those seeking blessings in academics and business. The main shrine building remarkably survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake and the air raids of World War II. Within the grounds, a miniature Mt. Fuji, constructed in 1782 with lava from the actual mountain, is opened to the public on June 30 and July 1. Ono Terusaki Shrine is also one of the Eight Lucky Gods of Tokyo Shitamachi, specifically known for bestowing blessings related to academics and the performing arts. It is also known for its connection to Atsumi Kiyoshi, the famous actor who starred in the “Otoko wa Tsuraiyo” movie series. He prayed at the shrine as a young man before landing the starring role. Visitors can explore smaller shrines within the complex, admire the beautiful Goshuin stamps (which change monthly), and enjoy the company of friendly cats.
