Discover more about Tsutsujigaoka Park

Tsutsujigaoka Park, a serene escape in the heart of Sendai, has been a cultural and natural landmark for centuries. Once part of the Edo-period feudal lord Date Masamune's castle grounds, the park was initially a space for the ruling class. Over time, it transformed into a public park for all to enjoy. The park is particularly famous for its cherry blossoms, with over 360 trees, including the Somei Yoshino variety. In the spring, the park becomes a vibrant destination for hanami (cherry blossom viewing). The park has been designated as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites. Weeping cherry trees, brought from Kyoto by Date clan lord Tsunamura in the 17th century, add to the park's elegance. Besides cherry blossoms, the park features plum trees, camellias, wisteria and bush clovers, offering year-round beauty. Other attractions include the Sendai City History and Folklore Museum, and the Mori no Uta fountain sculpture. The park also has green lawns and walking paths. Tsutsujigaoka Park was selected as one of the 100 best urban parks in Japan in 1989.
