Enoshima, a charming island off the coast of Fujisawa in Kanagawa Prefecture, is a captivating blend of natural beauty and spiritual significance. Connected to the mainland by the Enoshima Benten Bridge, this small island has been a popular destination for day-trippers from Tokyo since the Edo period. The island is home to Enoshima Shrine, a collection of three shrines dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, the patron goddess of Enoshima and one of Japan's Three Great Benzaiten Shrines. Visitors can explore the shrine's main hall and other beautiful buildings, and some even wash their money in the shrine's pond, as Benzaiten is also the goddess of wealth. For panoramic views, ascend to the Enoshima Sea Candle, a 60-meter-tall lighthouse observation tower that has become a symbol of the island. The Samuel Cocking Garden, a botanical garden established by a British merchant in the 19th century, surrounds the Sea Candle and offers a tranquil space to admire plants and flowers. Explore the Iwaya Caves, two caves created by natural erosion that were once a religious training spot. The caves are associated with legends of dragons and are dedicated to the myth. Stroll along Nakamise Street, a charming shopping street filled with local stores and restaurants, leading up to Enoshima Shrine. Sample local specialties such as turban shell and shirasu (whitebait). Whether you're seeking spiritual enrichment, natural beauty, or simply a relaxing escape from the city, Enoshima offers a delightful and memorable experience.
