Discover more about Fort Leicester

Perched dramatically above Bouley Bay, Fort Leicester is a testament to Jersey's rich military history. Originally conceived in the late 16th century, the fort was significantly expanded in 1836 as part of an island-wide strategy to defend against potential French invasion. Named after the Earl of Leicester, a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I, the fort has witnessed centuries of coastal defense. Historically, the fort was armed with five heavy cannons, capable of firing 32-pound projectiles over a two-mile range, and manned by the local militia. Its strategic position controlled the western approaches to Bouley Bay, working in tandem with L'Etacquerel Fort on the eastern side. During the German Occupation in World War II, the fort was further modified with searchlight housings and gun emplacements. Today, Fort Leicester offers visitors a unique experience. The original guardhouse has been transformed into a main bedroom, while former military magazines now house additional bedrooms and living spaces. The fort's unique construction integrates it into the surrounding rock face, creating a multi-level layout with outdoor access between rooms. Visitors can explore the grounds, enjoy panoramic views, and even venture down to the small beach below. While offering a step back in time, Fort Leicester provides modern amenities for a comfortable stay. It is a popular spot for photography, coastal walks, and enjoying the tranquility of the Jersey landscape.
