If you are traveling by car, start from the center of Livingston, KY. Head south on KY-49 S for about 5 miles. Turn left onto Salt Peter Cave Rd and continue for approximately 1 mile. The entrance to Great Saltpetre Cave Preserve will be on your left at 237 Salt Peter Cave Rd, Livingston, KY 40445. There is no entry fee for the preserve, but check for any guided tour costs ahead of your visit.
Public Transportation
Public transportation options are limited in the Knobs Region. If you can reach Livingston via a bus or shuttle service from a larger city (such as Lexington or Bowling Green), you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to get to Great Saltpetre Cave Preserve. From the center of Livingston, you can take a taxi south on KY-49 S to Salt Peter Cave Rd, then follow the same directions as for car travel. Be sure to confirm taxi availability ahead of time, as services may not be frequent.
Biking
For those adventurous enough to bike, start from Livingston and take KY-49 S. The road has a shoulder, but be cautious as it can be hilly. After about 5 miles, turn left onto Salt Peter Cave Rd and bike for about 1 mile until you reach the preserve. Ensure you have a map or GPS, and always wear a helmet for safety. There are no bike rental services available nearby, so bring your own bike.
Walking
If you are staying close to the preserve, walking is a beautiful way to reach Great Saltpetre Cave. From Livingston, head south on KY-49 S. The walk is about 5 miles and will take approximately 1.5 hours. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and carry water, especially in warmer weather. Note that there are no sidewalks, so be cautious of traffic.
