Car

From Xam Neua, the capital of Houaphanh Province, drive southeast on Route 6. After approximately 30 kilometers, you'll reach Viengthong. From there, turn onto Route 1A heading north towards Phou Lao. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for mountain roads. Parking is generally available at the base of the mountain.

Public Transportation

From Xam Neua, take a local bus towards Viengthong. The bus ride takes about 1 hour and costs around 15,000 LAK. From Viengthong, you may need to hire a local taxi or tuk-tuk to reach the base of Phou Lao. Negotiate the fare beforehand.

Hiking

For those who enjoy hiking, marked trails lead from the base of Phou Lao to the peak. The hike can take approximately 2-3 hours, depending on your fitness level. Ensure you have appropriate hiking gear and plenty of water.
