Wat Xiengthong is one of the most important and beautiful temples in Luang Prabang, Laos. Constructed between 1559 and 1560 by King Setthathirath, it has been a symbol of Lao culture and spirituality for centuries. The temple's name translates to 'Temple of the Golden City'. Wat Xiengthong showcases classic Luang Prabang architectural style with its sweeping, multi-tiered roofs adorned with gold stenciling. The Sim, or main congregation hall, features intricate carvings and a stunning 'tree of life' glass mosaic on its rear wall. Inside, the walls are decorated with gold patterns set against a black lacquer background, depicting scenes from Buddha's life and other religious motifs. Throughout its history, Wat Xiengthong has been a royal temple, used for coronations and important ceremonies. It also served as a gateway to the town for visitors arriving via the Mekong River. The temple complex includes several structures, such as the Tripitaka library, built in 1880, a drum tower added in 1961, and a mission hall dating back to 1560.
