Discover more about Wat Pa Phon Phao

Wat Pa Phon Phao, also known as Wat Phon Phao, sits on a hill southeast of Luang Prabang, offering a peaceful escape across the Nam Khan River. This Buddhist temple, sometimes called the Temple of Tranquility, is distinguished by its golden stupa and octagonal shape, representing the eightfold path to enlightenment. Built in the 1950s by Mrs. Bounmy Phonsak, a wealthy Laotian woman, the temple was intended as a place of peace for monks and laypeople. It also served as a forest meditation retreat. Ajahn Saisamut, a respected Lao Buddhist teacher, once headed the temple; his funeral in 1992 was one of the largest Laos had seen. The temple's interior features detailed and colorful murals depicting the life of Buddha and Buddhist teachings. One striking mural portrays Buddhist hell, serving as a reminder of moral living. Another showcases various Buddhist architectures from Southeast Asia. From the top floor's viewing platform, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding plains.
