Discover more about Nam Phou Fountain

Nam Phou Fountain, situated in the center of Vientiane, has become a notable landmark and a favored meeting point. Its history dates back to the French colonial era, with the fountain itself being constructed in the 1920s. Originally, the area was a public plaza that hosted a fresh market. Over the years, the fountain has undergone several renovations, most notably in 2009 when the AIF Group Laos invested 10 billion kip to rebrand the area. In earlier decades, Nam Phou Fountain functioned as a public square with a fresh market; today, the market is gone, replaced by numerous bars, cafes, and restaurants. The fountain provides a place for dates, family gatherings, and meetings with friends. While the fountain itself might not be the most impressive, its central location, beautiful light displays at night, and the surrounding options for dining and entertainment make it a worthwhile visit. In 2022, the government requested that the Nam Phou Fountain be returned to the public domain, recognizing it as an important heritage site. The site has been renovated to include green spaces, trees and public seating.
