Discover more about Plain Of Jars Tour

The Plain of Jars is one of Southeast Asia's most important prehistoric sites, located on the Muong Phuon Plateau in the Xieng Khouang province of Laos. The site comprises over 90 locations with over 2,100 megalithic stone jars. These jars, shaped like tubes, were used in Iron Age funerary rituals. The area is a mountainous region covering 16 square kilometers. The jars range from 1 to 3 meters in height and weigh up to 14 tons. Carved mainly from sandstone, some jars feature decorations like rock paintings. Archaeologists have identified over 31 different jar designs. The purpose of the jars remains a mystery, with theories suggesting they were used for storing food, collecting rainwater, or as part of burial rituals. Local legends claim giants used them to store rice wine. French archaeologist Madeleine Colani conducted the first major study of the Plain of Jars in the 1930s, discovering human remains and concluding the jars were linked to prehistoric burial rites. The site is considered a historical crossroads between the Mun-Mekong and Red River/Gulf of Tonkin cultural systems. The Plain of Jars was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019. Today, visitors can explore several sites, with Sites 1, 2, and 3 being the most popular. Due to extensive bombing during the Vietnam War, not all sites are safe to visit.
