Discover more about Wat Xiengthong

Wat Xiengthong, located at the tip of the Luang Prabang peninsula where the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers meet, is a masterpiece of Lao religious architecture. Constructed between 1559 and 1560 by King Setthathirath, this 'Temple of the Golden City' has been a symbol of Luang Prabang's cultural and spiritual heritage for centuries. The temple complex comprises numerous structures, each with its unique charm and significance. The Sim, or main congregation hall, features a sweeping multi-tiered roof, intricate gold stenciling, and detailed carvings. The rear gable is adorned with a stunning glass mosaic depicting the Tree of Life. Inside, you'll find the story of King Chanthaphanith and Jataka tales rendered in gold on black stencils. Other notable buildings include the Royal Funerary Carriage House, which houses the elaborate funeral carriage of King Sisavang Vong and other royal relics. The Red Chapel is home to a revered reclining Buddha image, which was displayed in Paris in 1931. The Tripitaka Library, built in 1880, holds ancient Buddhist manuscripts. Wat Xiengthong served as a royal temple until 1975 and was the site for coronations and important religious ceremonies. It remarkably survived the sacking of Luang Prabang in 1887, as the invading commander had studied there as a monk. Today, Wat Xiengthong is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors from around the globe with its beauty and historical importance.
