Discover more about Maija parks

Maija Parks, located in the heart of Cēsis, is a verdant retreat offering a blend of history, art, and recreation. Established in the 19th century, the park was originally known as Alexei Park and was designed with romantic castle ruins, which were fashionable at the time. The park's origins are linked to Count Carl Gustaf von Sievers, who in 1832-1833 arranged gardens with pathways opposite the castle tavern. The park's centerpiece is a long, narrow pond, once graced by a pair of black swans from Lisbon, gifted to Cēsis in 2005. The swans have become a major attraction. Adding to the park's allure is the sculpture "Battle with Centaur" by Kārlis Jansons, a recognizable symbol of Cēsis. Over the years, Maija Parks has undergone several transformations. After World War II, it was renamed 1st May Park, and later, Victory Park in the 1970s. Reconstruction work in 2005 earned it recognition as one of Latvia's best-maintained cultural monuments. Today, Maija Parks features a children's zone with age-appropriate attractions, outdoor tennis tables, a bicycle park, and a skate park. It serves as a venue for cultural festivals and seasonal celebrations, fostering a sense of community.
