Located in the town of Cēsis, this monument is not only an artistic structure but also a symbol of local pride and historical significance.The monument commemorates the students who took the road to the front line on June 6, 1919, to participate in the Battles of Cēsis. These battles were a crucial episode in Latvia's history, where joint Estonian and Latvian troops defeated the German Landeswehr and Iron Brigade, thereby solidifying Latvia's independence. The victory is celebrated in Estonia as Victory Day.The monument was originally unveiled on May 26, 1938, but it was dismantled during the Soviet re-occupation in 1952. During the period of national revival known as “Atmoda,” the monument was recreated and re-unveiled on November 11, 1992. The monument features a sculpture of a soldier dressed in a student's uniform, created by sculptor Rūdolfs Āboltiņš and coppersmith Jānis Zibens. At the soldier's feet lies an owl, symbolizing wisdom and knowledge, guarding the books of a student who went to war.Each year on November 11, Latvians celebrate Lāčplēsis Day, and a torchlight march commences from this monument.
