Discover more about Rožu laukums

Rožu laukums, meaning Rose Square, has been the heart of Cēsis since the 13th century when it was known as the Market Square. Historically, this square was a lively trading place, complete with a pillory and a well. In the early 20th century, the marketplace became too small for the growing town, leading to its relocation in the 1920s. In 1927, the area was repurposed into a town square. Following renovations in 2008 and 2009, Rožu laukums has become a contemporary urban space with a nod to its medieval past. The square is paved with cobblestone, granite, and concrete, arranged to reflect the historic water drainage patterns. The square features a fountain with alternating water rhythms, heights, and lighting, making it a popular spot for families and visitors. Today, Rožu laukums hosts markets, concerts, and even an ice-skating rink in the winter, reaffirming its role as the most significant and active area in Cēsis Old Town.
