Līču–Laņģu Cliffs are a captivating natural monument situated in the serene Liepa Parish of the Cēsis Municipality in Latvia. These impressive cliffs, stretching approximately one kilometer, rise majestically on the left bank of the Gauja River's ancient valley, offering breathtaking views and a unique geological experience. Reaching a maximum height of about 30 meters, the sandstone cliffs showcase diverse formations, including vertical walls and deep ravines. The cliffs are composed of Gauja suite sandstones, characterized by a high iron content that gives them a distinctive reddish-brown hue, partially covered by moss. This area is not visible from the Gauja river itself. Around the base of the cliffs, approximately 20 springs emerge, contributing to the formation of caves, niches, and other unique geological features. The Great Laņģu Cave, the longest at 48 meters, is located in the southern part of the cliffs and features a powerful spring. Other notable caves include the Middle Laņģu Cave (30 meters) and the Small Laņģu Cave (4.2 meters). The surrounding area is a haven for nature enthusiasts, with well-marked trails that wind along the cliffs, providing opportunities for hiking and enjoying the panoramic views. The diverse flora and fauna enhance the experience, making it ideal for bird watching and photography. Nearby, the Lode clay quarry reveals layers of grey-green and reddish-brown clay, and is known as the second largest Devonian vertebrate fossil site in the world.
