The castle's foundations were laid approximately 800 years ago by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. It reached its peak during the Teutonic Order's rule, serving as a vital hub for administration and commerce in Livonia and the seat of the Landmeister in Livland. The castle's history is marked by both glory and destruction. It suffered significant damage during the Livonian War when besieged by Ivan the Terrible's army. A dramatic event occurred in 1577 when around 300 people inside the castle committed mass suicide by detonating gunpowder. Although the castle remained in use for another century, it was eventually abandoned after the Great Northern War.In the 19th century, the Romantic movement sparked renewed interest in the castle, leading to its conservation and study. Today, Cēsis Castle is a major tourist destination in Latvia. Visitors can explore the Western Tower with a candle lantern, a tradition since 1996, offering panoramic views of Cēsis.
