Discover more about Karosta Water Tower

The Karosta Water Tower is an architectural monument of national significance located in Liepāja, Latvia. Constructed in 1905, the tower was an essential component of the infrastructure of Karosta, a naval port established by Tsar Alexander III. Its primary function was to provide a reliable water supply to the naval base and its residents, marking Karosta as a self-sufficient entity within Liepāja.The tower's design reflects the industrial architecture of the early 20th century, with its stately red brick construction. Water was originally pumped using steam-powered pumps to a tank on the fifth floor and then distributed to the surrounding houses. The tower played a role in the Latvian War of Independence in 1919, serving as an observation point to adjust Allied-British warship artillery fire.Decommissioned in 1989, the water tower no longer serves its original purpose. In 2010, it was granted the status of an industrial cultural monument of local significance. During the summer months (June, July, and August), the tower opens its doors to the public, hosting artists who use the space as workshops and exhibition areas. Visitors can explore the tower's interior, observe the artists at work, and view their creations.
