Discover more about Redāns

Redāns is a compelling historical landmark situated within the Karosta district of Liepāja, Latvia. As part of the Liepāja Sea Fortress, constructed in the late 19th century, Redāns holds a unique place in Latvian history. While much of the fortress was deemed strategically unsound and subsequently destroyed, Redāns remained largely intact, becoming the only section to witness actual combat. On November 14, 1919, during the Latvian War of Independence, Redāns was the site of fierce fighting against the forces of Pavel Bermondt-Avalov. After crossing the frozen Lake Tosmare, Bermondt's troops seized Redāns, but were quickly driven back in a determined counter-attack by local Latvian forces. Bullet holes in the walls still serve as a stark reminder of the battles fought here. Today, Redāns is open to visitors, offering a glimpse into the military history of the region. The site hosts the Karosta and War of Independence Museum, providing further context to the events that unfolded here. The grounds also feature art installations created during the Karosta festival, adding a contemporary layer to the historical setting. With space for outdoor activities and picnics, Redāns provides an opportunity to connect with both history and nature.
