Symposium Aley: An Open-Air Sculpture Museum

Symposium Aley, often called Lebanon's "city of statues," is a unique open-air museum that showcases over 300 sculptures created by artists from around the globe. This artistic endeavor began in 1999 when the municipality of Aley, driven by the vision of artist Aref Al Rayess, organized international symposia. The goal was to revitalize the town, which had historically been a popular summer resort, by establishing it as a hub for contemporary sculpture. For three consecutive years, Aley hosted these symposia, inviting artists from various countries to create sculptures on-site. The artists crafted their works from diverse materials such as wood, iron, mosaic, and marble, resulting in a collection that includes classic, modern, abstract, and figurative art. The sculptures are strategically placed throughout Aley, with a significant concentration in the Ras al-Jabal area, allowing visitors to discover art while exploring the city's scenic landscapes.
