Souk Haraj: A Mamluk-Era Marketplace

Souk Haraj, located in Tripoli, Lebanon, is a captivating historical landmark that showcases the city's rich heritage. Constructed during the 14th century Mamluk period, this covered bazaar stands out with its distinctive architectural design. The souk features a high vaulted ceiling, soaring eight meters high, supported by granite columns that may have originated from earlier Roman or Byzantine structures. These columns were renovated over time by Crusaders, Mamluks, and Ottomans.The souk's layout is also unique, differing from traditional khans by being bisected by a street and having a covered courtyard. It has four gates that open in different directions, leading into a vast, roughly square yard. Historically, the upper rooms surrounding the central square were used as hotels by merchants, with windows covered by pierced wooden boards, possibly used by veiled women to view the square discreetly.Today, Souk Haraj continues to be a vibrant marketplace where local artisans and merchants offer a variety of goods.
