Afqa Waterfall is one of Lebanon's most enchanting natural wonders. Cascading from a height of 200 meters, the waterfall flows from a cave in a cliff wall and marks the source of the Adonis River (Nahr Ibrahim). This site is deeply rooted in Phoenician mythology, believed to be the birthplace of Adonis, a deity of love and beauty. Legend says Adonis died near the falls, his blood turning the river red. The waterfall was considered sacred and symbolized the tears of Aphrodite.
Visitors can explore the grotto behind the waterfall and discover a hidden world of stalactites and stalagmites. Nearby stand the ruins of a temple dedicated to Aphrodite, adding a historical layer to the natural beauty of Afqa. Hiking trails offer scenic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Car
From Beirut, take the highway towards Jbeil (Byblos). Continue north, then follow signs for Afqa, approximately 80 km northeast of Beirut. The drive takes about 2 hours through scenic mountain roads. Once in Afqa, follow the narrow road leading directly to the waterfall. Parking is available near the site. Be prepared for potentially uneven roads.
Public Transport
Take a bus from Beirut to Jbeil (Byblos). From Jbeil, transfer to a local minibus heading to Afqa. The minibus will drop you off near the waterfall. The bus ride to Jbeil takes about an hour. The minibus from Jbeil to Afqa takes approximately 15-20 minutes. Expect to walk a bit to reach the trailhead.
