Discover more about Afqa Waterfall

Afqa Waterfall is one of Lebanon's most enchanting natural wonders. Cascading from a height of 200 meters, the waterfall flows from a cave in a cliff wall and marks the source of the Adonis River (Nahr Ibrahim). This site is deeply rooted in Phoenician mythology, believed to be the birthplace of Adonis, a deity of love and beauty. Legend says Adonis died near the falls, his blood turning the river red. The waterfall was considered sacred and symbolized the tears of Aphrodite. Visitors can explore the grotto behind the waterfall and discover a hidden world of stalactites and stalagmites. Nearby stand the ruins of a temple dedicated to Aphrodite, adding a historical layer to the natural beauty of Afqa. Hiking trails offer scenic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The best time to visit is between March and May when the waterfall is at its fullest due to snowmelt. Summer visits are also popular, offering a cooler retreat, though the water flow may be lower. Afqa is more than just a tourist attraction; it's an essential part of Lebanon's cultural heritage. The area provides a peaceful escape from the city.
