Harissa: Lebanon's Mountain Sanctuary

Nestled in the picturesque hills of Lebanon, Harissa is a charming village celebrated for its breathtaking views, spiritual significance, and rich cultural heritage. Located 650 meters above sea level, Harissa provides a tranquil escape with stunning vistas. The centerpiece of Harissa is the towering Virgin Mary Statue, also known as Our Lady of Lebanon, a monumental statue symbolizing faith and devotion. Erected in 1907, the 13-ton bronze statue, made in France, stands 8.5 meters high, with a diameter of 5 meters, her outstretched hands reaching towards Beirut. Visitors can ascend a spiral staircase inside the statue's base to get a closer look and enjoy unparalleled views. Harissa is more than just scenic views; it holds significant cultural and historical importance. The village is home to several churches, including the Notre Dame de Liban shrine, hosting numerous religious events throughout the year. The modern Maronite cathedral, built of concrete and glass, stands next to the statue. The Byzantine-style Melkite Greek Catholic basilica of St. Paul is also nearby. To reach Harissa, many tourists take the Téléférique cable car from Jounieh, offering an exciting and scenic journey to the monument. The ride provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, Jounieh Bay, and the surrounding mountains.
