Afqa Waterfall: A Mythical Lebanese Wonder

Afqa Waterfall, located approximately 80 km northeast of Beirut in the Jbeil District, is one of Lebanon's most enchanting natural sites. The majestic waterfall cascades from a height of 200 meters out of a cave in a 600-foot bluff, marking the source of the Adonis River (Nahr Ibrahim). The area is known for its stunning natural beauty and deep roots in Phoenician mythology. According to legend, Afqa was the birthplace of Adonis, the deity of love and beauty. The tragic tale recounts Adonis' death by a wild boar, his blood mingling with the river's waters, turning them red. The waterfall was considered sacred, symbolizing Aphrodite's tears for her lost lover. Nearby stand the ruins of a temple dedicated to Aphrodite, adding historical depth to the site's allure. Each spring, the melting snows flood the river, bringing reddish mud into the stream, which locals believe to be the blood of Adonis, renewed each year at the time of his death. Visitors can explore the grotto behind the waterfall, discovering stalactites and stalagmites in a cool, damp, mystical ambiance. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding countryside, offering panoramic views and hidden gems. The optimal time to visit is between March and May when the waterfall is at its fullest due to snowmelt. Summer visits are also popular, providing a cool escape from the heat, though the water flow may be lower. Nearby attractions include the Adonis Temple ruins and the Baatara Gorge Waterfall.
