Discover more about Nimrod Fortress National Park

Nimrod Fortress National Park, located in the Golan Heights, is home to the largest medieval castle in Israel. Rising dramatically at the foot of Mount Hermon, the fortress, also known as Qal'at al-Subeiba (Castle of the Large Cliff), stands as a testament to the region's tumultuous history. Originally constructed in 1229 by Al-Aziz Uthman, Saladin's nephew, the fortress was built to safeguard the route to Damascus and counter Crusader threats. Its strategic importance was evident in its commanding views of the surrounding landscape, controlling a vital road from Tyre to Damascus. The fortress was later expanded by the Mamluk ruler Baibars, becoming a formidable stronghold. Visitors can explore the well-preserved ruins, including the Northwest Tower with its Ayyubid inscription, the monumental Baybars inscription, and the Southwest Tower offering panoramic views. The fortress also features a secret passage, a large water cistern, and the impressive Donjon (keep). Despite its name, the fortress has no connection to the biblical figure Nimrod. Today, Nimrod Fortress National Park offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty, with hiking trails, diverse flora and fauna, and breathtaking views of the Golan Heights, Galilee, and Mount Hermon.
