Discover more about Hermon Stream Nature Reserve

The Hermon Stream Nature Reserve, or Banias, is located in the northern Golan Heights, near Mount Hermon. This stunning reserve encompasses nearly 19,500 acres and features the Hermon Stream, archaeological remains, and diverse flora and fauna. The Banias spring emerges at the foot of Mount Hermon and flows through a canyon for 3.5 km, leading to the Banias Waterfall, the most impressive cascade in Israel. Nine kilometers from its source, the Hermon Stream meets the Dan Stream, forming the Jordan River. Banias has been inhabited for thousands of years, with its spring associated with Baal-gad or Baal-Hermon in pre-Hellenistic times. Around the 3rd century BC, the Greeks dedicated the area to the god Pan, establishing a cult center and the city of Paneas. The Romans followed, with King Herod erecting a temple at Banias in honor of Emperor Augustus. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the ancient city, including the Cave of Pan, Roman temples, and Crusader ruins. The Hermon Stream Nature Reserve offers several hiking trails, ranging from short loops to longer treks. The trails wind through forests of oak, ash, and plane trees, alongside the Hermon Stream. The reserve is divided into two main areas: the Springs area, featuring the archaeological site, and the Waterfall area, with the Banias Waterfall and a hanging trail. A 2-kilometer hiking trail connects the two areas.
